Scene Narration

Across our great state, Wyoming’s Natural Resources are under ATTACK!

The attackers…armies of invasive plants from other continents.

Not all plants from other lands cause serious problems, in fact most are benign and some are quite beneficial. In general, if introduced plants only grow where we plant them, they do not cause big problems.

However, some experts estimate that 1% of plants brought to North America from elsewhere spread very aggressively and cause serious economic or ecological problems.

Invaders like leafy spurge, knapweeds, whitetop and salt cedar can choke out native plants and ruin wildlife habitat or reduce the value of Wyoming landscapes for a variety of uses.

Please make an effort to learn to recognize the worst invasive plants in your area. There are color pictures and lots of great information the internet about invasive weeds. In addition, your local UW Cooperative Extension and County Weed and Pest Offices have a variety of resources to help you fight the war against invasive weeds.

From the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service, I’m Paul Meiman.
