Jonita Sommers, Sublette County resident, historian, and author, has done extensive research on the history of the Upper Green River Basin and its ranching industry.  During the past few years, Jonita  revisited sites captured years ago in photographs shared with her during research for her writing.  Jonita wishes to share these photographs of grazed rangeland sites with others, and in doing so provide an opportunity for viewers to consider and make their conclusions regarding the trends that photography can illustrate.

The photographic pairs are all  separated by decades, and some are separated by  a century.  The information that a trained observer can retrieve from a paired set of photographs certainly is worth the proverbial "thousand words".   Some guidance to interpreting the photos is shared here.  The extension range faculty of the UW Dept. of Renewable Resources, Drs.  Skinner, Smith, Rogers, and Crane, as well as Peterson are your commentators.

In this site, we have shared the photographic pairs from 17 sites from the Green River Valley of Western Wyoming. Thanks to Jonita Sommers for her interest in sharing these photographs.  They are important in documenting the Green River Basin's "Rangelands through Time"
